Fighting PMS with Prozac

Prozac and PMSProzac can be a great weapon in the battle against PMS (premenstrual syndrome) depression. The blues, mild to moderate mood swings and anxiety attacks are common psychological / emotional symptoms of PMS, but a smaller percentage of women are struck down with debilitating depression during their PMS phase. Bad enough that such a serious bout of depression should occur even once a year, but dealing with this once every month can be too much for any woman to bear. Help is now at hand in the form of the anti-depressant drug Prozac, a revolutionary treatment for other forms of depression that is now also recognized as a therapy for PMS depression. Prozac (Fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor. Severe PMS in which emotional and psychological symptoms predominate is now termed premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder).

Prozac and other anti-depressants, prescribed following consultation with both a gynecologist and psychiatrist are the recommended course of treatment for women who suffer from PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). Should your doctor decide that Prozac is the best means to treat your PMS depression, severe anxiety and mood swings, don't expect to be handing in a prescription for Prozac to your pharmacist. Eli Lilly who manufacture Fluoxetine under its standard, widely known name of Prozac received FDA approval to market it specifically of the treatment of PMS and PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) as Sarafem. This way, the application of Fluoxetine for PMS depression versus other forms of depression is distinguished. Prozac/Sarafem, taken alone or in combination with other medication, may be your best means of escape from PMS symptoms, so consult with your gynecologist and a specialist psychiatrist to determine whether this is the route to happier, brighter PMS.
